The reason we are able to swim is because of opposite and equal reactions. When you pull your hand through the water in freestyle for example, you are pushing the water backwards and applying a force to the water. The forces of your hand and the water are acting against each other, and because of this as you push the water backwards the water also pushs you forwards. The forces act in opposite directions. The size of the waters force exerted on you will be equal to the force that you exerted onto the water.

Shooting A Basketball
We are able to shoot a basket ball because of equal and opposite reactions. When you shoot a basketball you are pushing the basketball forwards and applying a force to the basketball. The forces of your hand and the ball are acting against each other, and as you push the basketball forwards the basketball also applies a force onto you and pushes you backwards. The forces are exerted in opposite directions. The size of the basketballs force exerted on you will be equal to the force that you exerted onto the ball.
